DETROIT – The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan rose to 898,626 on Tuesday, including 19,862 deaths, state officials report.
Tuesday’s update includes a total of 1,028 new cases and 14 additional deaths in the past four days – an average of around 257 cases and 3.5 deaths per day. The state announced a total of 897,598 cases and 19,848 deaths on Friday.
Tests have dropped to around 10,000 diagnostic tests reported per day on average, with the 7-day positive rate less than 2.5% Friday, near the lowest on record. Hospitalizations have declined in recent weeks, now near the lowest point since the start of the pandemic.

The state’s 7-day moving average for daily cases was 219 Friday – slightly higher than the week before. The 7-day average of deaths was 7 Friday, the lowest since March. The state’s death rate is 2.2%. The state is also reporting “active cases,” which were listed at 8,000 on Friday.
Michigan reported more than 9 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine given on Friday, with 62.7% of 16+ residents who received at least one dose while 54% of 16+ residents are considered fully vaccinated.
According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 34 million cases have been reported in the United States, with more than 609,000 deaths reported from the virus. Globally, more than 3.6 billion doses of vaccine have been administered, including more than 322 million doses in the United States alone.

Worldwide, more than 191 million people have been confirmed to be infected and more than 4 million have died, according to Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are certainly much higher, due to the limited testing, the different ways nations count the dead, and the deliberate underreporting of some governments.
