Michigan State Police investigating officer involved in Shiawassee County shooting

SHIAWASSEE CO., Mich. (WILX) – A man from Owosso has died and a state soldier is on leave after an officer fired in Shiawassee County, Michigan State Police said.

The shooting took place in the Brewer Road area near Morrice Road in Bennington Township at around 6:21 p.m.

Preliminary investigation, police said, said Private Flint responded to a call from a man walking through the area and acting in an unusual manner.

The soldier said he used his taser after the man turned combative, however, this had no effect on the man. The 37-year-old then pulled out a gun and began to open fire.

The soldier tried to remove the weapon from the man’s hands, but to no avail, and the man started aiming at the officer. The soldier then retaliated, fatally injuring the man. The soldier was not injured in the altercation, Michigan State Police said.

The investigation is ongoing and the officer is on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation as part of MSP policy. Stay with News 10 for updates.
