HOUGHTON – The Van Pelt and Opie Library at the University of Technology of Michigan will host a special talk by local researcher John Haeussler in the East Reading Room on October 14 at 6 p.m. In his presentation, Haeussler will share his research and photographs of local hockey players who made it big with Notre Dame in the early 1900s.
When Notre-Dame played its first informal hockey game in 1912, a student from Calumet was one of the stars. When the Irish began playing between colleges in 1921, their roster included three other Calumet High School alumni. Notre Dame’s first intercollegiate match was at Houghton Amphidrome, her first intercollegiate victory at Calumet Colosseum.
In this 100th anniversary year, the presentation highlights Copper Country’s contributions to the formative years of Notre Dame Hockey. This presentation takes place a night before the Michigan Tech Huskies host Notre Dame in their home opener on Friday the 15th.
John Haeussler is the author of a book on the history of Hancock and has co-authored another. His current project is a biography of Bill Gray, the first Calumet high school alumnus to play at Notre Dame.
This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information, please contact the University Archivist, Lindsay Hiltunen at (906) 487-3209 or [email protected].
* The University of Notre Dame Football Review 1921, citing legendary ND coach Knute Rockne, said this about Hunk Anderson and Ojay Larson of Calumet: “Neither is of Celtic descent, but as Rockne says, ‘they’re Irish by environment.’
