Windows 10 doesn’t remember app passwords for some users, Microsoft confirms
Windows 10 cannot remember passwords for some users, Microsoft has confirmed. Here is the 5-step workaround.
Windows 10 users have complained about apps including Outlook, OneDrive, Chrome, and Edge forgetting their passwords since the May 2020 update. This Windows 10 2004 update came in April, but the password problem persists.
Fortunately, there is a solution, albeit a workaround, rather than an OS update fix. Still, it’s better than waiting for Microsoft to release an appropriate patch, as we have no idea when that might happen. I contacted Microsoft and will update this article if I hear more.
The Windows 10 password memory bug
While the bug does not affect the Windows 10 login itself, nor does it affect every user, it is an important issue for those caught up in the system password memory issue. ‘exploitation.
The application username and password are required every time Windows is restarted.
The password is displayed every time a PDF file is loaded.
There are even reports of password managers requiring a master password when configured to use a fingerprint.
What has Microsoft confirmed so far?
Microsoft is aware of the issue because an Outlook support update for Microsoft 365 on November 6 has been confirmed.
“After you install Windows 10 Version 2004 Build 19041.173 and related updates, you find that Outlook and other applications no longer remember your password,” Microsoft said.
Notably, while giving no idea when a fix will be released, it seems Microsoft at least knows what’s going on.
Rather vaguely, the support post confirms that the password memory issue “occurs when certain Windows 10 task scheduler tasks are configured in a certain way.”

So, since a permanent fix is not yet available, what can Windows 10 users do to prevent this from happening every time they restart their device?
Microsoft has come up with a workaround which, as you might have guessed, is to disable tasks using the task scheduler.
1. Select Windows PowerShell (as administrator) from Windows 10 Start button after right clicking.
2. Paste the following into Powershell:
Get-ScheduledTask | foreach {Si (([xml](Export-ScheduledTask -TaskName $ _. TaskName -TaskPath $ _. TaskPath)). GetElementsByTagName (“LogonType”). ‘# Text’ -eq “S4U”) {$ _. TaskName}}
3. Press Enter and note all the tasks listed in the output that follows.
4. Open Windows Task Scheduler and disable these tasks by right-clicking on each one.
5. Restart Windows 10.
And that should be it, although Microsoft says missing passwords may need to be entered one last time, after which they will need to be saved correctly.
