Microsoft has scheduled a press event this Wednesday, September 22. The Surface Duo 2 should be present, among other less mobile Surface brand hardware. In apparent preparation for a quick release, the successor to the single dual-screen foldable phone has stopped by the Federal Communications Commission for the usual round of testing and certification.

Windows Central spotted the phone jumping through typical hoops, and while we don’t have a full set of specs, there are a few interesting additions over the 2019 model. FCC documentation states that the new version of the phone will have 5G wireless support, ultra broadband and Wi-Fi 6, all quite expected from a new phone. It also packs NFC for payments (something the original phone lacked) and “wireless power transfer,” which almost certainly seems to be a form of Qi wireless charging. Microsoft would never load Surface hardware from a bulky proprietary connection, right?

The language in the ranking such as the “flip and flat” positions and the numbering system of the software indicate that this is indeed a new generation Surface Duo design. A previous leak showed that the Duo 2 would use a Snapdragon 888 processor, a triple rear camera setup, a newly centered USB-C port, and would come in both a more matte white finish and a new black color option. It also looks like the rear camera bump will be a chonker, but no one who buys this type of device is particularly concerned about ultra-portability.

We will be watching Microsoft’s second attempt at a foldable Android flagship on Wednesday. One can only hope that this one will have the refinement of the original necessary to push it beyond an expensive novelty.
