Microsoft’s new Surface Pro 7 ad hits Apple’s MacBook Pro hard

In 2021, Microsoft woke up and chose brutal honesty.

In its latest ad for the Surface Pro 7 (via MS advanced user), the company spent 30 seconds listing all the ways it thinks the 2-in-1 laptop is better than Apple’s MacBook Pro.

The video begins by addressing what many see as the MacBook Pro’s biggest weakness: the Touch Bar. Comparing it to the capabilities of the Surface Pro’s stylus and touchscreen, the young boy praising the device points out:

“The Surface comes with a stylus and it’s a touchscreen. Mac gave me that little bar, but why can’t they just give me a full touchscreen?”

It seems Apple is aware of the seriousness of the Touch Bar functionality. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company plans to replace it with physical keys for the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch models.

Funny enough though, the video Is state that its Surface Pen does not actually come with Surface Pro, adding a disclaimer stating “Pen and some apps are sold separately.”

Microsoft points out that the Surface Pro also has a removable keyboard. Meanwhile, with the MacBook, “you’re kind of stuck with what you’ve got.” Of course, that’s definitely how the company highlights the Surface’s versatility – with the ability to switch between a laptop and a keyboard. But I can’t help but think that it’s also a slight dig into the MacBook Pro’s messy past with its problematic butterfly keyboard.

The video also touches on the power difference between the two devices, boasting that the Surface Pro “has the power to run all your apps” and “is a much better gaming device.” (Editor’s Note: This is debatable and depends a lot on the configuration you purchase.)

To complete the jabs, Microsoft ends by reminding everyone how much cheaper their device is than the MacBook Pro.

The base model Surface Pro 7 (with a 12.3-inch display) starts at $ 749.99, but that’s without the extra accessories like the stylus and keyboard. The 13-inch MacBook Pro, on the other hand, starts at $ 1,299 for the M1 model (Apple’s internal chip) and $ 1,799 for its Intel model.

But if Microsoft’s new ad sold you by going for the Surface Pro 7 over the MacBook Pro, it might be a good idea to wait – if you want the latest device, that is. Rumors have it that we may see the Surface Pro 8 at some point in 2021.

And it remains to be seen whether or not Apple will return for the Microsoft ad. Anyway, all I can say for now is: Touché, Microsoft. Touch.
