GARDEN CORNERS – The Mid Peninsula Wolverines had a successful night on the service line here Tuesday in a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 25-10) victory in volleyball over the Blacks Bears of Big Bay de Noc.

Mid Pen collected 26 aces, including five each by Cora Prater, Josie Hemminger and Shae Lampinen in this season opener.

“We have done very well in the service line”, Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser said. “We try to create a certain team chemistry. We have three new girls on the team, and they are getting used to the roles. Landry (Koski) was very aggressive at the net. It was a great effort from our team and a great first victory. It was good to take the nervousness out of the first game. “

Koski recorded 13 kills and 12 digs in this non-conference game. Prater finished with 15 digs. Alex Haring added nine, and Shae Lampinen and Avery Croasdell have seven each. Mattie VanDamme had 14 assists.

Big Bay’s Alix Bleau had five aces with three kills and 13 digs. Piper Jones had four kills and four blocks. Katelyn DeKeyser added 17 digs and Ellie Nedeau had 11.

“Despite the loss, I was really proud of the way our girls played tonight”, Big Bay coach Angie Paulson said. “We’ve fought small numbers and an injury already this season, so for them to come out with the energy and tenacity that they did in the first two sets, I can’t harass them too much. What hurt us was poor communication and slow feet in the third and fourth sets.

“I was really proud of Ellie tonight. She was fighting hard for her recoveries and tipping well at the net which we have been working on for a few years. Katelyn and Alix did a great job on the ground and in the pursuit. freeball and Piper as always did a great job at net as well. She was strategic with her tips and had some good blocks tonight. Overall the potential is there and I hope we continue to capitalize on this positive dynamic. ”

In the JV game, rookie Tia Nummilien served 100% of the line and collected 13 aces as Mid Pen beat the Black Bears 25-10, 25-2.
