Welterweight candidates Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz will not be competing for an official world title in November at UFC 244 in New York, but the two favorites of the fan will compete for the "Baddest Motherf – ker" belt.
That sounds cool, especially since UFC President Dana White will be making a real "BMF" belt to wrap the size of the winner, but that could put the UFC back to legitimize the MMA's sport. .
So says Miesha Tate, former bantamweight champion for women, and ONE champion, who believes UFC is taking a page from the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) book by inventing a belt that actually wants nothing say.
"This really marries the feeling of WWE to the UFC like never before," Tate said recently. Sirius XM Fight Nation (h / t @The popular MMA).
"Start putting the belt around people who are not [the best]while what does the belt mean exactly?
Tate is right and it's pretty obvious. Diaz and Masvidal are not world champions. Heck, no fighter is even considered the best at 170 pounds and they can never be.
That said, fighting fans are pretty smart. Although the "BMF" belt is comparable to some of the many titles offered as part of a pre-determined WWE action, combat observers understand what is happening and can draw the line when true strikes are launched and hit.
Diaz and Masvidal are two of the most willing and competent fighters in the sport today. They will fight anybody at the slightest drop and exude unwavering confidence all the time. This is what makes these men one of the most wicked on the planet and that is why White is ready to create a special belt for their fight in November.
Still, Tate is probably not alone in his assessment. Fans of this sport, as well as fighters who train hard and have won fights in an attempt to shoot their own ball at the belt, might consider this "BMF" reservation as a simple money grab. That may be the case, but when it comes to athletes such as Diaz and Masvidal, it becomes harder to hit.
