Heading into Saturday’s exhibition bout between boxing legends Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr., it was impossible to predict what would happen in the ring. At a combined age of 105 and with the uncertainty about the rules before the event, an already unpredictable situation seemed even more difficult to comprehend. But once the men got in the ring, they went as hard as they could for eight two-minute rounds leading to a draw on the judges’ scorecards assigned by the WBC.

Tyson appeared to stack most of the early rounds, landing the cleaner punches and muscular Jones in the clinch. Jones was the most visibly tired man in the corner between rounds, but he continued to try to eliminate the fight, increasing its volume in subsequent rounds. This despite the fact that Tyson is much further removed from his days as a professional fighter.
Jones’ late work saw him score enough late rounds to secure victory on one scorecard and a draw on the other. With Tyson winning the third scorecard, the fight was left a somewhat unsatisfying draw.
While Tyson said he was happy with the result, Jones was less thrilled, saying after the fight, “I wear prints, I don’t do prints.”
After the fight, Tyson told interviewer Jim Gray that he plans to move forward by fighting more exposures and even seemed interested in taking it back with Jones.
“I usually do this for three minutes,” Tyson said of the rounds. “Sometimes those two minutes feel like three minutes to me. I’m glad I had this under my belt to keep doing that and going further.”
Jones was less committed to fighting again, simply stating it was “hard to say”.
However, Tyson put an end to any thoughts of returning to the ring as a professional.
“It’s bigger than fighting and winning the championship,” Tyson said of attending shows where he donates money to charity. “We are humanitarians and we help people.”
Fans who logged in to watch the pay-per-view event from Staples Center in Los Angeles were treated to an extra layer of absurdity, with Snoop Dogg joining the commentary team – as he had done in a fight before. the vicious KO of Jake Paul.
