San Diego Gas & Electric’s Pomerado North project hit the 20% completion mark this week, officials said.

It is part of a pipeline replacement project where SDG & E plans to test or replace segments of its Line 1600, a 16-inch natural gas transmission pipeline built in 1949. This phase of the Safety Improvement Plan pipeline includes 19 separate projects for approximately 50 miles of existing pipe. Of that, 37 miles are replaced, including the segment that goes through Rancho Bernardo and Poway. Most of the replacement pipeline is installed under Pomerado Road in this area.

The nearly 6-mile Pomerado North project, which spans RB and Poway, is now about 20% complete, said Jennifer Ramp, senior director of communications for SDG & E. This week, a team is in front of Palomar Medical Center Poway, and communications continue with hospital staff to ensure there is 24/7 entry and exit. -she adds.

Ramp said the teams had also dug under the golf cart tunnel that runs under Pomerado Road, with pipe installation scheduled for the end of the week. Night work is expected to start at the intersection of Pomerado Road with Twin Peaks Road and Camino del Norte around September 12 and continue for two weeks. She said notification letters will be sent to people in that region about a week in advance.

Two teams are also working in Poway, one about 100 feet north of the intersection of Pomerado Road with Colony Drive and the other just south of Monte Vista Road.

The various North Project locations combined have over 1.5 miles of trenching completed and over a mile of pipe installed, Ramp said.

On the Pomerado South project, a three-mile stretch to Poway from Ted Williams Parkway to Scripps Poway Parkway, a team has started work near the intersection of Pomerado and Vaughan Roads. A second shift has started near the intersection of the Pomerado and Poway roads. As of Tuesday, more than 540 feet of trenches were completed and more than 350 feet of pipe installed, Ramp said.

She added that updates are being sent to the Poway Unified School District and campuses near the work areas.

According to the current schedule, work on the north segment is expected to be completed by the end of January 2022, while the south segment will likely be completed by June 2022, Ramp said.
