CLEVELAND (AP) – Milwaukee ace Corbin Burnes has no hits in eight innings in a dominant performance against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night.

Burnes has 14 strikeouts and overpowered the Indians, who could be on the verge of hitting for the third time in 2021.

Cleveland was the closest to getting a hit with two strikeouts in the eighth, but center fielder Lorenzo Cain made a slippery grab on Owen Miller’s sinking lining in the right center to keep the no-no de Burnes intact.

Burnes, who looked like he had to convince manager Craig Counsell to leave him after seven innings, had a perfect game in the seventh before giving up a walk. He threw 115 shots, a season high.

Burnes, 22, is aiming to throw the ninth batterless record in majors this season, surpassing the mark set in 1884 – the first year of overhand pitching was allowed. Burnes has not lost since May 25.

He’s been in control from the start, striking out 11 of the top 14 batters and striking out the top 18 batters in sequence. However, he pushed Indian main hitter Myles Straw to start the seventh, ending his attempt at perfection.

Burnes recovered from the bet on his first baserunner, blocking Straw in the second by removing slugger Franmil Reyes for the final in the seventh – his 13th strikeout. He threw 103 shots.

The right-hander eclipsed 200 strikeouts for the season in the second inning and is coming off with a Cleveland team that has not already been hit twice this season.

Milwaukee leads 3-0.

Juan Nieves threw the only hit in Brewers history in 2012.

All-Star for the first time this season, Burnes tied the major league record with 10 consecutive strikeouts in a game against the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 11.

The Indians haven’t been touched twice this season – first by Carlos Rodón of Chicago on April 19, then Wade Miley of Cincinnati on May 7.

Earlier this week, Cleveland didn’t get any hits against Minnesota rookie Joe Ryan until there was a seventh inning putout.
