Milwaukee County Postal Code Vaccination Program Begins Monday

MILWAUKEE – Starting Monday morning, March 22, the Milwaukee County Postal Code Vaccination Program begins. Local officials say this is a huge step forward towards equal access to the vaccine.

Registration through the county vaccination site at the Kosciuszko Community Center has already started, but it’s not your only option. At 10 a.m. on Monday, two sites open in Milwaukee – at North Division High School and South Division High School – where no appointment is necessary.

“This is a new chapter,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. “We’ve never done walk-in clinics before.”

Residents of Milwaukee County in 10 zip codes are urged to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated against COVID-19. The only other requirement is age.

“In these postal codes, all people 16 and over, if they receive the Pfizer, and 18 and over for other vaccinations, will be eligible for the vaccinations,” Barrett said.

The zip codes chosen are among the most underserved and highest in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Social Vulnerability Index, but officials say these neighborhoods have some of the lowest vaccination rates.

“My heart felt joy. It’s a huge victory for health equity in the state, ”said Dr. Jasmine Zapata, public health physician and peactor at UW Health.

Zapata is originally from Milwaukee and grew up in three of the qualifying zip codes.

“From a medical professional within the walls of the hospital and also being from Milwaukee, I ask you all to think about it,” Zapata said.

She urges the public to do their best when it comes to health.

“The shots are very safe and efficient, and it’s an important tool in our toolkit to overcome that,” Zapata said.

On Sunday, community leaders expressed the importance of increasing access and streamlining the process.

“It is critical that our under-represented communities come to these sites,” said Milwaukee Alderman JoCasta Zamarripa.

“It shows they care,” said Maribel Dorantes, 20.

Dorantes, who lives in one of the priority postal codes, said it was a positive step forward.

“We need our health to be safe,” Dorantes said.

City walk-in vaccination sites at North Division High School (1011 W. Center Street) and South Division High School (1515 W. Lapham Boulevard) will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. see you on Friday. No appointment necessary.

You will not be prompted for your Social Security information or your citizenship status.

You do not need health insurance and the vaccine is free.

Also on Monday, people aged 16 and over with certain medical conditions who are at a higher risk of serious infection with COVID-19 will be eligible for a vaccination. The list of medical conditions can be found on the state Department of Health Services website.
