Mini reefs to install in the waters of Fort Myers Beach

On Thursday morning, artificial mini-reefs are set up in the waters of Fort Myers Beach.

A total of 48 units will be put in the water to replace what was lost decades ago due to development. Officials say that there is a lot of space lost in the water and that the units are offsetting it.

Mini-reefs can also be beneficial for the water crisis in southwestern Florida.

"Well, the filterers living there like oysters – on average, will filter about 30,000 gallons a day of green algae – red plankton, and so on. And every year, they give fish and crabs a chance to grow where, in the canal system, there is normally no eco-system for them to survive, they will simply be eaten " said David Wolf.

Ocean Habitats has announced that they will set up the reefs at 9 o'clock on Thursday.
