INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – The Indiana State Department of Health is facilitating vaccination of adults.
On Tuesday, state commissioner for health, Kris Box, issued a statement that allows adults to be vaccinated against measles without a prescription from a health care provider.
Any adult can go to a pharmacy that carries the vaccine. The cost will be charged to the insurance.
"Vaccination is the best way to prevent the spread of this highly contagious disease, and we want to eliminate any barriers that may prevent the protection of Hoosiers during this outbreak nationwide," said Dr. Box. "Even a case of a disease that was largely gone is too much, and we hope this proactive measure will help prevent other cases in Indiana."
Measles a virus and spreads in the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms include cold-like symptoms, such as a low-grade fever, a cough, a runny nose and conjunctivitis or a pink eye.
The number of measles cases reported nationally is the highest in the United States since 1994.
