Friday’s COVID-19 update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 2,645 new cases and 13 newly reported deaths, 12 in September and one overdue since February. A man in his 30s from Benton County was among the victims in today’s report.
The death toll in the state is 7,983 since the start of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 57.7% (4,601) were long-term care residents.
As of September 15, the state reported that 3,368,735 people had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 3,187,694 people had completed the series of vaccines. The percentage of the population of Minnesota who received at least one injection, by age group:
- 12-15: 53%
- 16-17: 59%
- 18-49: 63%
- 50-64: 75%
- 65+: 91%
- Total population: 61%
57.3% of the total population of Minnesota, including children under 12 who are not eligible for the vaccine, have completed the vaccine series. This rises to 67.8% excluding children under 12. MDH has a public dashboard for tracking vaccination progress in Minnesota, and you can view it here.
Hospitalizations
Until September 16, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 719 (down from the 719 reported Thursday). Among those hospitalized, 211 people are in intensive care and 508 in general hospital care.
Here’s how many people are hospitalized based on regional location, although that doesn’t mean every patient has contracted the virus in those specific regions, as they may have been diverted depending on available beds.
- Metro: 110 ICU, 272 non-ICU
- Central: 36 ICU, 58 non-ICU
- Southeast: 23 ICU, 51 non-ICU
- Northeast: 13 ICU, 36 non-ICU
- Northwest: 11 ICU, 20 non-ICU
- Center-Sud: 10 intensive care units, 44 non-ICU
- Southwest: 2ICU, 18 non-ICU
- West Central: 6 ICU, 9 non-ICU
Tests and positivity rate.
The 2,645 positive results in Friday’s update came from 48,578 completed tests, creating a test positivity rate of 5.44%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 7.67%.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percent positive rate (total positives divided by total tests performed) of less than 5% for at least two weeks be necessary to keep the economy open and safe.

* Probable deaths are patients who died after testing positive using the COVID-19 antigen test, which is considered less accurate than the more common PCR test.
