Thursday’s COVID-19 update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 1,215 new cases and 9 newly reported deaths, all nine of which occurred in September.
The death toll in the state is 7,874 since the start of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 57.8% (4,557) were long-term care residents.
As of September 7, the state reported that 3,344,415 people had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 3,152,889 people had completed the series of vaccines. The percentage of the population of Minnesota who received at least one injection, by age group:
- 12-15: 52%
- 16-17: 58%
- 18-49: 62%
- 50-64: 74%
- 65+: 92%
- Total population: 60%
56.7% of the total population of Minnesota, including children under 12 who are not eligible for the vaccine, have completed the vaccine series. This rises to 67.1% excluding children under 12. MDH has a public dashboard for tracking vaccination progress in Minnesota, and you can view it here.
Hospitalizations
As of September 8, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 663 (up from 654 reported Wednesday).
Among those hospitalized, 178 people are in intensive care and 485 in general hospital care. The spring surge saw a peak of 202 patients in intensive care and 517 people in general hospital care.
Here’s how many people are hospitalized based on regional location, although that doesn’t mean every patient has contracted the virus in those specific regions, as they may have been diverted depending on available beds.
- Metro: 97 ICU, 274 non-ICU
- Central: 28 ICU, 49 non-ICU
- Southeast: 27 ICU, 66 non-ICU
- Northeast: 10 ICU, 22 non-ICU
- Northwest: 5 ICU, 16 non-ICU
- Center-South: 6 ICU, 36 non-ICU
- Southwest: 2 ICU, 14 non-ICU
- West-central: 3 ICU, 8 non-ICU
Tests and positivity rate.
The 1,215 positive results in Thursday’s update came from 31,413 completed tests, creating a test positivity rate of 3.86%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 7.41%.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percent positive rate (total positives divided by total tests performed) of less than 5% for at least two weeks is necessary to keep the economy open and safe.

* Probable deaths are patients who died after testing positive using the COVID-19 antigen test, which is considered less accurate than the more common PCR test.
