Mississippi mother arrested after drowning two children in locked car

LELAND, Miss. Police announced that a 25-year-old Mississippi woman had been arrested after two of her three children drowned after leaving in a locked car that rolled into a creek.

According to Clarion-Ledger, Leland police on Monday charged Jenea Monique Payne with two counts of negligent homicide and one count of child negligence.

Payne's third child, 2-year-old Raelyn Johnson, was rescued on Saturday as Payne's SUV floated downstream. About two hours later, when divers found the vehicle, the bodies of Steve Smith, age 4, and Rasheed Johnson Jr., 1 year old, were inside.

WLBT reports that Leland's Fire Chief was a lifeguard.

Police said Payne told investigators that she had left the kids for five to ten minutes before going to a convenience store.

Leland is about 85 miles northwest of Jackson.
