A girl from St. Louis, Missouri, would fight to survive after developing a rare neurological disease that would likely be a complication of the flu.
Earlier this month, Layla Thomas, 2, showed signs of flu, Aunt Jessica Kile told KMOV-4.

"She just had a runny nose, maybe a little cough but nothing extraordinary that we had never seen before," she said.
But on March 18, the little girl's symptoms worsened. She reportedly had a 107-degree fever and was reportedly taken to St. Louis Children's Hospital. At this point, the toddler was "completely insensitive" and was only "making small eye movements," Kile said. According to a GoFundMe article on her behalf, Layla was later diagnosed with influenza A.
Finally, the doctors determined that Layla had developed a rare neurological disease called necrotic encephalitis, a complication that can develop from the Influenza A or B virus.
"Even with appropriate antiviral treatments, some of these serious complications can lead to permanent disability or even death," Rachel Orscheln, a physician at St. Louis Children's Hospital, specializing in infectious diseases told Rachel Orscheln. .
According to Layla's fundraising page, the girl underwent "blood transfusions and was in an induced coma" and would have had "a 50/50 chance of survival".
"Layla is a fighter and shows little signs of improvement every day," reads on the fundraising page, although she says the little girl still has "a very long road to recovery before her.
She remained in the pediatric intensive care unit for about 10 days, according to KMOV-4.
Kile described Layla as "loving" and stated that she was a "cuddle bug".

"We are just praying for us to recover," she added.
Kile did not immediately postpone Fox News's request for additional comments on Thursday.
