Missouri examines bill to ban discrimination for non-vaccination

JEFFERSON CITY, MB (AP) – Missouri lawmakers are considering banning discrimination against unvaccinated children.

The Missouri bill, considered by a House committee on Monday, would prohibit discrimination in daycares, doctors' offices and public schools if children had a legal exemption to vaccination.

Missouri grants vaccine exemptions for religious and medical reasons.

Some parents told lawmakers that their unvaccinated children had been denied child care or doctors. The representative of the pharmacist and bill sponsor, Lynn Morris, said that parents were being bullied for vaccinating their children.

A similar measure failed to reach the house last year.

Missouri legislation comes at a time when other states are considering limiting vaccine exemptions in the event of an outbreak. In March, Washington legislators passed a measure to remove exemptions for measles immunization. An epidemic in southwestern Washington has made dozens sick.
