After the end of the 2021 season, Major League Baseball will likely eliminate doubles programs in seven innings and the automatic runner on second base in extra innings, Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Tuesday night’s All-Star game in Denver, Manfred claimed he didn’t expect either rule to be “A part of our future that is moving forward”, grateful that they are “much less likely to be part of our permanent landscape.”

MLB initially implemented the pair of new rules ahead of the 2020 season to shorten games amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Manfred believed that by limiting the time spent at the stadium, the measures would potentially reduce exposure to COVID-19 and epidemics.

The MLB has maintained every rule for the 2021 season, and while the vaccinations have promoted better health, Manfred has asserted that the changes will not be made until after the season is over.
