More stringent security measures will soon be put in place at sporting events held in public schools in Mobile, Alaska, following a shootout that took nine lives as a result of a football game held in high school.

"Our children and their families deserve to participate in a high school football game or any public event without the thought of gun violence," said Mayor Sandy Stimpson in a statement on Saturday. "As a community, we will heal. As a community, we must take weapons away from our youth. "

Teen suspect arrested

A 17-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with nine counts of attempted murder on Saturday in connection with shooting at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Mobile's FOX 10 reported.

The suspect was clearly seen shooting shots in images captured by surveillance cameras, said Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste, according to the Associated Press.

The police think the teenager was the only gunman, but some adults knew that the attack was going to happen, said Battiste, urging these people to speak to the police.

The shooting took place after a match between LeFlore High School and Williamson High School. Police said the suspect was a LeFlore student. Fox News retains the name of the suspect because he is a minor.

Should survive

The chief said six people were shot "directly". It was unclear whether the other three victims had been shot or wounded. Battiste told AL.com that six of the nine wounded had left the hospital on Saturday.

The nine victims, aged 15 to 18, are expected to survive, said the chief.

A tenth injury was attributed to a crisis of which one person was a victim during the unrest caused by the shooting, the newspaper reported.
