Modern family co-creator Steve Levitan aligned his follow-up series with the ABC Emmy darling.
Levitan put To restart to Hulu, which has placed a pilot order for comedy starring Keegan-Michael Key and Johnny Knoxville.
Here’s how the potential series is described: “When Hulu reboots a family sitcom from the early 2000s, its dysfunctional cast is forced to reunite and now have to deal with their unresolved issues in today’s fast-paced world. . “
Details on the roles Key and Knoxville will play are being kept under wraps, as the comedy is also expected to feature characters, including new and old showrunners from the show within the series.
Levitan is credited with the story of the pilot and co-wrote the TV movie alongside John Enbom (Party it up, Veronica Mars, iZombie). Levitan is credited as the show’s creator and executive producer alongside Enbom and Danielle Stokdyk. To restart hails from 20th Television, the Fox-owned studio that became Disney and has been Levitan’s home for over a decade.
Levitan, who co-created Modern family alongside Chris Lloyd, extended his deal with the studio with a nine-figure pact in 2019. In an interview with THR in April 2020 linked to the series finale of Modern family, Levitan noted that he was focusing on new projects outside of the beloved family comedy. “I’m focusing on what will happen when things get back to normal. I am working on four projects at different stages [of development]. I’m writing a pilot right now and I’m getting involved in other ideas as well, ”he said.
The value of Levitan’s deal does justice to what he accomplished with Modern family, the ensemble comedy that tied Emmy record for most streak wins (five in a row). Unlike other showrunners who have cashed in mind-blowing mega-chords, Levitan tends to take a more specific approach to development rather than working on multiple series at once (like Greg Berlanti, Shonda Rhimes, and Ryan Murphy).
Should To restart switch to the series, he would live alongside the Modern family library at Hulu, which (along with Peacock) secured the streaming rights to all 250 episodes of the series earlier this year.
Knoxville is best known for the Donkey franchise and account Bad Grandpa, The Dukes of Hazzard, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The ring among his credits. It is replaced by CAA, 3 Arts and Sloane Offer.
Key, currently co-starring in Apple’s musical Schmigadoon, netflix account College friends, playhouse and Comedy Central’s Key and Peel among his TV credits. He is with UTA and Brecheen Feldmar.
