Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has been shown to create immunity to the bug for at least three months, the biotech company said.
Thirty-four healthy adults who received two doses of Moderna’s vaccine candidate, mRNA-1273, were found to have antibodies for 90 days, according to new findings published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The first dose “produced high levels of binding and neutralizing antibodies which decreased slightly over time as expected, but remained elevated in all participants 3 months after the booster vaccination,” says the study.
The two doses were administered 28 days apart.
The report was not clear on the level of risk people would face after 90 days and whether another vaccine would be needed.
Earlier this week, Moderna applied to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization, saying data shows her vaccine is over 94% effective against the coronavirus.
The Massachusetts-based company said on Friday it would be able to produce 500 million doses of the vaccine in 2021.
“For 500 million, I am very confident that we will get there,” said CEO Stéphane Bancel at the Nasdaq Investor Conference.
Bancel said the company would sell each dose for between $ 25 and $ 37.
Pfizer and BioNTech have also applied for emergency use authorization for their vaccine in the United States, and it was approved for use in the United Kingdom on Wednesday.
