Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine was the second of two that have now received emergency use authorization in the United States, where the latest data from Johns Hopkins shows nearly 23 million cases and more than 377,000 deaths have been reported since the start of the pandemic.

Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the World Health Organization, warned on Monday that herd immunity – the phenomenon in which enough people have natural immunity or are generated by a vaccine against a virus to end the pandemic – unlikely to be reached in 2021. However, the continued rollout of coronavirus vaccines like Moderna’s is what will speed us up to get to this point, with Swaminathan also appearing to recognize that herd immunity could be achieved this year in at least “A few pockets” around the world.
