Mom asks for birthday cards for her son who is "fed up with life"

The mother of this little boy wants the world to offer his son a birthday present: hope.

Rhys Williams, 13, suffers from a painful skin condition that prevents her from walking and moving freely outside her home in Lancashire, England. And lately, chronic suffering has affected his will to live.

He told his mother, Tanya, that he wanted a butterfly to come and take her away. She now asks for birthday cards so that he will notice the attention he is taking.

"I do not think he can fight any longer," she said. "His life depends on it."

Rhys suffers from severe dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB), a rare hereditary skin disorder that leaves skin fragile and prone to blisters and scars. DEB has no treatment, has her fingers merged and confined to a wheelchair.

At birth, Rhys was not supposed to survive as a teenager. On September 21st, he is almost 14 years old. But his mother says he has trouble staying positive.

"Rhys' life revolves around the school, the Xbox, sleep, repeat," says Tanya. "He does not want to shop because he does not like the way people look at him."

Although he takes morphine to help relieve pain – which doctors can only do for patients like him – the fight to treat it every day has become too difficult.

"In recent months, he was tired of life. He's tired of hurting sores. He just wants to give up, he does not want to fight anymore. "

She hopes that if people send birthday cards to Rhys, it will show him that people take care of him and want him to live. Last Christmas, she made a similar call, which allowed her to cheer herself up. Hundreds of holiday cards were sent to her son, which helped her understand that "not everything is bad," she says.

"It showed him that he still needed to fight, that there were people who cared about him and who loved him."

Cards can be sent to Rhys at 40 Whalley Avenue, Bolton, BL1 5UD.
