Mom discovers cancer from her daughter's eye after noticing a strange glow on the photo

The care of the details by an Oregon mother may have saved the life of her 2-year-old daughter after she noticed a strange gleam in her child's eyes as she looked at a picture.

"I knew something was wrong with Gracie because her eye would be glowing and it looked like she was having a lazy eye," said Elly Smith of Oregon, to her daughter's 5 years now. "I gave him an appointment the day I noticed him and his doctor referred us to an ophthalmologist. I could tell that something was wrong over there and I noticed that the doctor's chest was turning red – I was just asking what was wrong.

Smith said that in May 2016, doctors discovered several tumors in Gracie's eye and diagnosed him with retinoblastoma. According to the American Cancer Society, cancer begins in the retina and is the most common type of eye cancer found in children. If the tumors are not treated, they can develop and fill the eyeball, causing other symptoms, including more tumors, pressure in the eyes, or glaucoma.

Specialists at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia have consulted with Gracie, who has determined that the best course of action would be to remove her eye and replace it with a prosthetic.

One of the difficult parts of the diagnosis was figuring out how to tell her little girl so that she could understand it, Smith said. Gracie underwent a vision suppression operation on June 1, 2016 and started chemotherapy two weeks later. Three months after the surgery, she received her prosthetic eye, reported SWNS.

"Gracie was in agreement with that," Smith told the press, who said his daughter was fully recovered. "She is so resilient. When they do the eye, you have to choose something to put on top so you know which is the top of the eye – Gracie chose a horse. "
