Mom with coronavirus gives birth to twins in coma

A woman in the UK who was hospitalized with the novel coronavirus gave birth to twins while in a coma.

Perpetual Uke first became ill with COVID-19 at the end of March. Her illness became so severe that she was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where she then needed a ventilator and was placed in an induced coma, Sky News reported.

Uke, who was also pregnant when she fell ill, delivered twins – a boy, Pascal and a girl, Palmer – by Caesarean section while still in a coma.

“I was 24-25 weeks pregnant at this point, and by the time I woke up I was so disoriented. I thought I lost my pregnancy because I couldn’t see my lump anymore. I was really worried, ”she said on the exit.

The twins, who gave birth on April 10 at 26 weeks old, each weighed less than two pounds when they were born. They were placed in incubators in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

After the babies were born, Uke spent 16 more days in the hospital’s intensive care unit before he could finally meet his babies, according to Sky News.

“They were so small they didn’t look like my older kids, I couldn’t touch them, I felt so moved,” she said of their first meeting.

While Uke was in hospital, her husband, Matthew Uke, looked after the couple’s other two children. He said he had mixed feelings on the day the twins were born as his wife was still battling the virus.

“My wife was still in a coma, sick, I couldn’t talk to her. I was happy the twins were delivered, but the point is, my wife is coming home? he remembers.

Eventually, Uke and his new babies were released from the hospital. The family was reunited and the mother of four said the twins were doing “wonderfully”.
