Claude Monet finished painting in 1890

A painting by Claude Monet was purchased for $ 110.7 million, a new world record for a work by the French artist.

Monet finished oil painting in 1890 as part of his series Meules (Haystacks), describing the rural life close to his home in Normandy.

The sale is also the first time that an impressionist painting is selling for more than 100 million dollars.

It was auctioned for the last time in 1986, while it was only worth $ 2.5 million.

Until then, it was in the hands of a family – who bought the work directly from the dealer of the artist – for nearly a century.

According to a Sotheby's press release, this painting is now the ninth most expensive auction ever sold.

His buyer would have beaten five other bidders at the sale in New York. Sotheby's have not named the new owner.

The Monet Haystacks series included 25 paintings, most of which are on display in art galleries around the world.

It's one of his four works to go under the hammer during this century.

Water Lilies in Bloom was previously Monet's most expensive painting, selling $ 84.7 million in May 2018.
