Monitoring severe storms and flood threats

DETROITWelcome Thursday!

We start our day calm and dry, and I think we will stay that way for the most part until lunchtime.

Sunrise today was 6:11 a.m.

During the afternoon, an approaching cold front during the warmest part of the day will generate a line of scattered thunderstorms. Not everyone will necessarily have one, but any storm that does occur will produce torrential downpours and possibly strong to severe wind gusts.

Temperatures will rise rapidly until the mid-1980s in the early afternoon, then slide a bit due to clouds and storms.

The wind will generally blow from the southwest at a speed of 10 to 15 mph and become gusty.

Thursday sunset is at 9:08 p.m.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to subside for part of Thursday night (likely those further north). The lowest will be in the upper 60s. Winds will move north behind the cold front, then northeast later overnight, moving at 4-7 mph.

Some rains from Thursday to Friday

Total precipitation from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon will likely be less than an inch for most, with totals greater than one inch for those receiving several heavy storms.

We will see periodic showers and possible thunderstorms on Friday, but I suspect there may be breaks in the rain for parts of the day.

The highs will cool down until the mid-1970s due to clouds and rain.

Heavy rains start on Friday evening

Rain and thunderstorms will increase from Friday evening through Saturday, with periods of very heavy rain likely. At this point it looks like we could easily take another one to two inches of rain. So far, it appears that the highest risk for the largest total rainfall amounts is south of M-59. Total rainfall could be between two and three inches for some, so I have serious concerns about potential flooding.

Weekend forecast update

Saturday highs will remain in the mid-1970s due to cloud and rain. Hopefully the rain could end for those in the south and west by late Saturday afternoon.

Sunday seems dry for most of us right now, with only a chance of a lingering Sunday morning shower in the thumb – but that’s uncertain at this point. Sunday highs will recover to the lows in the mid-80s.
