Hundreds of children from a Hasidic community near Montreal have been vaccinated against measles after the occurrence of five confirmed cases in recent weeks.

Some 350 children in the Hasidic community of Tosh were vaccinated in four days at two temporary health clinics set up by the public health authority, the Canadian Jewish News reported.

The free vaccinations were voluntary and offered to those whose medical records indicated that their vaccinations were not up to date, according to the report.

Prior to the opening of the temporary clinics, approximately 90% to 95% of children in the Tosh community were already vaccinated, said Isaac Weiss, public safety officer in Tosh Community, CJN.

Unvaccinated children will not be allowed to enter community schools in the fall, Weiss said.

It is not known who brought measles into the community, although it would have been brought by a New York visitor. These are the first cases of measles in the region since 2011.
