More than 1,000 cases of measles in the United States for the first time since its eradication

The ongoing measles epidemic has reached a new record, surpassing the 1,000 confirmed cases in the United States so far this year.

The Centers for Disease Control reported Monday that there had been 1,022 cases in 28 states until June 6th.

This marks an increase of 41 cases since the previous week. The last update indicated that during the first five months of the year, from January 1 to May 31, 981 cases had been confirmed.

The disease is now present in more than half of the states, with Idaho, New Mexico, Virginia and Maine having confirmed their first cases in recent weeks.

The new total, while reaching the symbolic threshold of 1,000 cases, has already set records as there have been so far more cases in 2019 than any other year since Eradication of measles in the United States in 2000.

In fact, according to CDC data, there have been more cases so far this year than in the last four years.

The majority of cases have been confined to a small number of populated areas in the 28 states where they have been reported.

In New York State, New York City recorded 566 confirmed cases from September to June 3, while Rockland County recorded 259 from an unspecified date from 2018 to June 6 . The CDC has reported outbreak in no other part of the state. .

There have been 81 cases in the state of Washington – including 71 in Clark County alone, although all were reported before the month of May. In May, there were nine new cases in the state, said their health department.

The California Department of Health reported 51 confirmed cases as of June 3, the highest total in a county: 10 in Los Angeles.
