More than 200 people have been vaccinated in Bexar County without revealing their age, confirms Metro Health

SAINT ANTHONY – Nearly 300 people of “unknown age” have received their COVID-19 vaccine in Bexar County, according to Metro Health officials.

Metro Health deputy director Dr Anita Kurian confirmed this Thursday during the city’s coronavirus briefing. The state announced that a total of 278 people had been vaccinated without disclosing their age to health officials at the time of their vaccination.

Dr Kurian added that it is likely that some of the “unknown age” people who receive their vaccines are under 16 years of age.

“It’s very possible … We have seen providers administering vaccines to people under the age of 16,” Dr Kurian said during the briefing.

Those who receive the Pfizer vaccine must be 16 years of age or older, according to health officials. Those who receive the Moderna vaccine must be at least 18 years old.

When registering for an appointment for a vaccine, people are always asked for their date of birth to verify their age. However, Dr Kurian said it didn’t have to be, at least at the Alamodome vaccination site. She said people can still register even without revealing their age.

“We do everything we can to screen for these missing variables and these age criteria on the spot, but sometimes people may pass despite the screening measures in place,” said Dr Kurian.

Although the current authorizations for Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are not for those under 16, Dr Kurian said it would still be reported to the CDC if those authorizations are violated.

“When vaccines are administered outside of these emergency use authorization requirements, we report it… goes directly to the CDC,” Dr. Kurian said.

Metro Health reported on Thursday that 524,642 residents had received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. A total of 294,158 residents are now fully vaccinated.
