More variant COVID delta cases confirmed in Bay Area

Santa Clara and Marin counties have detected several cases of the delta plus variant, a first in the bay area.

As of Wednesday, there were 64 known cases of the delta plus variant in Santa Clara County, according to the county’s public health department.

Marin County also announced that it had confirmed two cases of this delta variant sub-strain in July, according to their official COVID dashboard.

What distinguishes the delta plus variant from the highly contagious delta variant is that delta plus acquired the mutation in the spike protein called K417N, which was first identified in the beta variant originating in South Africa. .

Cases have already been confirmed in South Korea, the United Kingdom, Portugal and India.

In California, there were 14,402 new confirmed cases of COVID on Thursday, according to the state health department.
