More West Nile Virus samples are positive in Washoe County

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The Washoe County Health District reports that five other mosquito samples have been tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Samples were collected near Longley Lane and South Rock Boulevard.

So far, no human case of West Nile virus infection has been reported to Washoe County Health District. However, the positive test results clearly indicate that people must take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Tips for avoiding mosquitoes include:
– Wear long sleeves and long pants if you go out early in the morning or in the evening.
– Wear insect repellents containing DEET, picaradine, lemon eucalyptus oil or IR3535.
– Check your mosquito nets to make sure there are no holes or cracks that can let in the mosquitoes.
– Make sure there is no stagnant water around your house. Even small puddles of water or containers containing water will allow mosquitoes to reproduce.
– Vaccinate your horses against the West Nile virus.
