Country singer Morgan Wallen has asked his fans not to defend him because he “was wrong” and is now “taking possession” of the problems caused by a racial insult recorded by a neighbor.
Wallen took to Instagram and delivered a five minute video of what happened the night he was recorded saying goodbye to friends and using the N word. The fallout from this incident saw him suspended by his label, pulled from the radio and abandoned by many representatives and institutions of the country genre.
Wallen, 27, has since remained silent but has appeared today to give his side of the story.
“The video you saw was me in the 72nd hour of a bender, and it’s not something I’m proud of either,” he said. “Obviously the natural thing to do is apologize more and keep apologizing for getting caught, and that’s not what I wanted to do.”
Wallen lamented the people he let down by his conduct and said he apologized to them. He also contacted and engaged in “very real and honest conversations” with leaders of various black organizations. Although not specified, Wallen said they offered him a chance to “learn and grow.”
Wallen said he had learned that “a word can really hurt a person.”
“This week I heard firsthand personal stories of blacks that really rocked me,” he added. “And I know what I’m going through this week doesn’t even compare to some of the trials I’m talking about. I came away from these discussions with a deep appreciation for them and a clearer understanding of the weight of my words.
“Our actions matter. Our words matter and I just want to encourage everyone watching to learn from my mistake, ”he said. “There is no reason to minimize what I have done. This is important and know that I am choosing my next repair steps carefully. “
Wallen said he will be off the grid for a while and revealed he has been sober for nine days.
“I want my team, my family, my friends and even strangers to trust me. Damn, I wanna trust myself. Who knows if I will be able to live with all the mistakes I made, but I will definitely try.
