Syracuse, NY – Mosquitoes infected with the Jamestown Canyon virus that can spread to humans have been found in Syracuse and Liverpool.
The Onondaga County Health Department said today that the infected mosquitoes were found in traps on Midler Avenue in Syracuse and Onondaga Lake Park in Liverpool.
This is the first time that the virus has appeared in the Syracuse region since 2014.
Jamestown Canyon virus can be transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. It is not as dangerous as Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus, two other potentially fatal diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes infected with these two viruses have not yet presented themselves this summer in the traps of the health service.
Fever, headache, and fatigue are common symptoms of Jamestown Canyon virus disease. It rarely causes serious illnesses such as encephalitis or a brain rash.
While the Jamestown Canyon virus is present across much of the United States, most cases are in the upper Midwest.
The health ministry said the best way to avoid infection was to use insect repellant, wear shoes and long pants outside, and fix broken screens in homes.
