The family of a 24-year-old man who underwent a double lung transplant is urging young people to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

Cheryl Nuclo, of Georgia, told local Atlanta broadcaster WSB-TV 2 that her son Blake Bargatze had no underlying conditions when he contracted Covid-19.

“He called me that Friday when he got the results,” Ms. Nuclo said, “and he said,“ Mom, you’re going to be mad. I have COVID. ‘ “

She said he vaped regularly but did not have diabetes or high blood pressure when he caught Covid traveling to Florida in April for an indoor concert.

He has since spent three months at three hospitals in Florida, Atlanta and Maryland and is now working to walk again.

Stepdad Paul Nuclo told the station he wanted to wait a few years to see if there were any side effects, but now wishes he hadn’t.

“As soon as he got to the hospital, however, he said he wished he had received the vaccine,” he said.

He was the only one in the family who did not get the vaccine and Ms. Nuclo hopes others will not follow his example.

“Maybe if some people were on the fence a little bit and swaying, he wants them to see what could be the extreme of what can happen… Without using a scare tactic, but it can happen.”

“I just don’t ever want anyone else to go through this again,” she said.

A GoFundMe raised $ 33,000 for the surgery, which friends say occurred after “complications” while in hospital. He will need another six to eight months of recovery and rehabilitation in Baltimore.
