MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Washington (AP) – The Pierce County Medical Examiner's office has identified a mountaineer who died Wednesday in a stone fall on Mount Rainier, 45-year-old Arleigh William Dean of Alaska.
Officials at Mount Rainier National Park said that a mountaineer called 911 on Wednesday night had reported that six climbers had been caught in a rock fall on their campground on the Liberty Ridge Road.
Park guards responded by helicopter, bringing Dean's body to the medical examiner's office.
The most seriously injured climber was taken to the Seattle Harborview Medical Center, where a spokesman said on Friday that he remained in serious condition.
According to officials, another less injured mountaineer was treated at another hospital and released. The others were not injured and were airlifted later on Thursday.
