Moving average of COVID-19 cases soars in WI, new Delta variant cases found

MADISON, Wisconsin (WMTV) – Cases of delta variants have increased by more than 50% over the past week in Wisconsin as concerns about wearing masks have rekindled in the state.

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene published 182 cases of the Delta variant on Thursday, up from 120 last week.

Variant data was pulled from the Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 dashboard over the past week and moved to the state lab. State lab data shows that so far as of July, more than 78% of sequenced cases have emerged as the Delta variant.

These variants have also seen increases over the past week:

• Alpha: 3,619 this week versus 3,590 last week.
• Gamma: 321 this week versus 314 last week.

The beta remained unchanged at 65 cases.

DHS confirmed 889 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the seven-day average to 556 on Thursday. This is a large increase from the previous day, when it stood at 476 cases. The seven-day moving average has increased sixfold over the past month.

There have been 619,921 cases found in Wisconsin since the start of the pandemic.

The state also confirmed two new deaths from COVID-19 on Thursday. There were 7,436 in total.

One third of 12-15 year olds receive at least one dose.

One-third of Wisconsin’s children aged 12 to 15 have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine, according to the DHS COVID-19 Dashboard.

So far this week, 20,611 doses have been administered to Wisconsinites.

About 51.8% of residents received at least their first vaccine and 49.3% completed their series.
