MCHENRY COUNTY – The McHenry County Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of mumps.

According to the Department of Health, eight cases were reported in two locations; six at the Crystal Lake Church and two at the McHenry County Correctional Facility. Health officials work to determine if the two sites are linked.

Health officials said mumps usually starts with fever, headaches, muscle aches, fatigue and loss of appetite. Swelling of the salivary glands, which causes swollen cheeks and a tender, swollen jaw, may follow. Symptoms usually appear 16 to 18 days after infection, but this period can range from 12 to 25 days.

Mumps is a contagious viral disease that is spread by saliva or mucus from the mouth, nose or throat when people who are infected cough or sneeze.

Health care providers in McHenry County and surrounding areas have been informed of these cases.

Anyone who thinks they have been exposed to mumps and / or symptoms should contact a health care provider.
