Murphy and Coffey lead Gophers to thwart Purdue

CHICAGO – Under pressure from the NCAA tournament, the Gophers beat their best first half of the season offensively in the quarter-finals of Friday's Big Ten tournament.

Few teams can beat Purdue, one of the top five teams in the country in offensive efficiency.

After shooting 63% in the first period, the seventh-seeded Gophers beat Purdue (2nd) with Jordan Murphy and Amir Coffey (48 points overall) in a 75-73 win on Friday night at the United Center.

Minnesota (21-12) makes its second trip to the semifinal tournament in three years, which included the last NCAA tournament team in 2017.

Carsen Edwards, the Big Ten's scorer, broke free to score three points in the corner, but his shot was taken over by the mark at the end of the allotted time.

Edwards, who averaged 23.4 points per game, had just 11 points on a 4-on-17 shot from the Boilermakers (23-9), who lost for the second time in three in Minnesota this season.

Murphy, Coffey and Gabe Kalscheur combined to score 31 points in the first period on Friday to lead the Gophers to a 42-39 lead at half-time.

Kalscheur got the best score of his team with 11 points in the first half on shots to three for five from three points. Five shots in the first half of Minnesota were more than in the 77-72 overtime win Thursday against Penn State.

We wondered if the Gophers were about to see their bubble enter the playoffs after seven defeats in 10 games. They dispelled the slightest doubt about the possibility of winning an NCAA tournament bid with consecutive victories in Quadrant 1, two days running in Chicago. This improves their Quad Sheet 1 to 5-9.

Jerry Palm, of CBSSports, told the Star Tribune that the Gophers could have been as good as the No. 8 with a second victory Friday against Purdue, ranked No. 12 in the NET ranking of the NCAA.

You could argue that being the No. 10 seed would be better for the Pitino team that does not have to play the No. 1 seed in the second round, but it's now up to the selection committee to determine .

What the Gophers proved on Friday was that they were part of the Big Dance, especially after giving their Big Ten teammates everything they could.

In the second half, Minnesota led by twice to 10 points, including 57 to 47 after a Daniel Oturu in a basket in the 12th minute. Purdue responded with a 15-4 run to take the lead after Carsen Edwards made a decisive pass to score 62-61.

Pitino asked his veterans to answer. After Trevion Williams scored his second straight shot, Murphy pushed Matt Haarms, the center of Purdue, in a goal to give the basket a bigger blame. The three points of the All-Big Ten senior striker gave his team a 72-71 advantage.

The Big Ten's big bouncer continued to dominate the glass by grabbing his own pass and getting less than two minutes to play. Murphy made both free throws for a three-point lead.

The Gophers probably had the chance to seal the match when Murphy found Kalscheur in the corner to score three points 28 seconds from time, but his basket was canceled after the timer expired.
