MARQUETTE – The West Shore Fishing Museum has canceled its scheduled Social Ice Cream Sunday due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the region. The museum will remain open as usual on Saturday and Sunday afternoon until Sunday. The raffle will take place at 3 p.m. at the museum on Sunday, but there will be no food served and no live music.
“This cancellation has a serious impact on fundraising. The event brought in up to $ 3,000, which would have been allocated to the new construction fund ”, officials said in a statement. “A 1,564 square foot addition to the Visitor Center is planned to house much-needed exhibition and meeting space, an office for archival storage and research, and two unisex washrooms.”
The construction fund currently stands at nearly $ 50,000. The first objective is to reach $ 80,000 in order to construct the building on the already existing foundations.
Inflated construction material costs put that out of reach this year, organizers say. Once this is done, volunteers can start working on some of the interior work.
The total fundraising goal is $ 150,000.

West Shore Fishing Museum exhibits “One of the most complete collections of boats and commercial fishing equipment in the region”, said the organizers.
