Elon Musk recently said he plans to bring humans to Mars by 2026, seven years before NASA aims to land astronauts there.
Multibillionaire and SpaceX founder Elon Musk told the Mars Society 2020 Virtual Convention that he aims to create a self-sustaining city on Mars before a possible World War 3.
“I think it’s useful to have the goal of creating an autonomous city on Mars,” he said. “This must be the goal, not just a few people or a base, but a self-sufficient city.”
Musk then said it was important to test whether the Mars colony would die if supplies stopped coming from Earth for some reason, even nuclear annihilation. “If so, we are not in a safe place,” he said.
“Are we going to be able to create an autonomous city on Mars before or after World War III?” I hope there will never be a third world war, but [the probability of creating] after is weak ”.
“We should try to make this city self-sufficient before any possible World War 3,” Musk said.
He said, however, that it’s just a series of probabilities that humanity faces: “There’s a chance we have a giant war, a supervolcano, or a comet strike – or we could just go extinct.” .
“Frankly, right now, civilization doesn’t look super strong, you know, we look a bit rickety right now,” he added.
The tech mogul said Mars was not an escape option until it was made self-sufficient, however, noting that this would likely not happen in its lifetime.
“It doesn’t make sense to have a lifeboat if you’re just moving to another place where you’ll die soon. It doesn’t count, ”he said.
“It’s really about minimizing the existential risk to civilization as a whole and having a future where we’re a space civilization and a multi-planetary species,” Musk explained.
Earlier, Musk’s neighbor on Forbes’ list of the world’s greatest billionaires, Bill Gates, explained in an interview with a video blogger what the main threats to humanity are after the COVID-19 pandemic. He said there were two main threats: climate change and bioterrorism, adding that humanity could increase its preparedness for global pandemics to minimize the death toll.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX conducted a second high-altitude flight test of his Starship heavy transport vehicle, which is currently one of the billionaire’s primary weapons in the battle to colonize Mars.
The two high altitude tests were semi-successful, however, with both vehicles successfully launching, turning around, but landing hard, resulting in their destruction.
