My PS4 was fun, but it was also a garbage can

The Xbox 360 was as famous for its catastrophic hardware failures as it was for its catalog of Level A video games. My PlayStation 4 comes very close to being remembered in the same way.

Let me ask you a question, and I want you to be 100% honest with me: if you’ve ever owned a standard PlayStation 4 – not a PS4 Pro or PS4 Slim – how long did it last before? to start doing terrible things?

Was your PS4 noisy? Does he do it beep at strange times (my god the beep)? Maybe it’s both noisy and hot. Have you ever seen a PS4, in a flight of fancy, Simply spit out a disc from its disc drive for no reason. All of these things happened to me in the course of my possession: first the beep, then the increasing volume, and finally the disc spitting requiring an exorcism (and no, before you ask, none of the myriad of available advice is ‘was of no help).

I realize it’s anecdotal, but roughly everyone I know who owned a regular PS4 had at least one of the same issues. Google “strong PS4” and you’ll see we’re not just talking about my deepest circle here.

It was so frustrating! It was a good console with good games, but the constant hardware issues were just the biggest pain in their ass, especially since they were sitting in that deeply itchy spot on the ‘whatever’ scale. vs. “get replaced” like an itchy rash between your shoulder blades that bothers you, but you can’t reach it.

I have spent the last 2-3 years playing all PS4 games with my headphones because the fan noise would get so loud under stress that it would muffle a game’s voice. It got to the point this year. , as I struggled to hear the whispers and footsteps The Last of Us II, that it started to discourage me from playing PS4 games.

If it had been small things, I could have learned to live with it. What if it was some serious problem that kept me from playing games, I would have paid for a repair or a new console. But each of my PS4’s issues fell somewhere in between those two decisions. I have been trapped in the purgatory of reliability.

Never in my life have I owned a console like this, and I’m talking about a large (and current!) Sample size, since I keep so many of my old machines in the house. Right now, for example, I have a PS2, PS3, Dreamcast, and GameCube all plugged into a TV, and these only work well.

Other consoles that I bought in the past 20 years that haven’t survived like my first Xbox 360 (RROD) and the PS3 launch (can’t remember the details) just stopped going function, but their deaths were swift and sudden, and most importantly, occurred under warranty.

My launch on PS4, on the other hand, feels like his skin has been falling off his rotten bones for years now, and that’s just the most frustrating thing. I can only hope that those wacky, huge fins on the PS5 (and its higher cost) are somehow related to preventing Sony’s new console from suffering the same fate.
