Mysterious monolith found in remote Utah

The general rule of thumb when you stumble upon something weird: don’t touch it. Especially if it’s a big ass stranger metal structure (although, okay, likely human origin). But that’s exactly what people during a sheep counting expedition (really) in a remote area of ​​southern Utah did this weekend. As reported by local NBC affiliate KSL TV, a helicopter crew from the Utah Department of Public Safety was assisting Wildlife Division officers on a bighorn sheep count mission last week when a biologist spotted a large metal structure on the ground and told them to turn around. Reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s monolith 2001: A space odyssey, this metal structure is said to be around 10 to 12 feet tall and appears to have been planted – not fallen – into the ground.

“We were kind of joking that if one of us suddenly disappears then we all rush,” said pilot Bret Hutchings. “We thought, like, is that something NASA is stuck up there or something like that. Do they bounce satellites or something like that? Hutchings also noted the similarity to 2001 and postulated that the monolith could have been made by “some new wave artist or something like that.

As you can see in the video above, those giggles wasted no time snooping around with the structure, and while it’s almost definitely man-made and likely harmless, it’s not a claim that can be made with 100% certainty. At the very least, the officials involved intentionally don’t share the specific details of the monolith’s location for fear that further chuckles will spoil the fun.
