Scientists have made an attempt to observe and understand mysterious bursts of light on the surface of the moon.
"Transient luminous lunar phenomena" occur several times a week and illuminate part of the lunar landscape for a brief period before disappearing.
Sometimes an opposite effect that darkens the lunar surface has also been observed.
Although there are several theories about the origins of the mysterious moon lights, they have not yet been fully explained.
Astronomers from the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) in Bavaria, Germany, have developed a telescope that will use artificial intelligence to automatically detect lightning.
When a burst of light is spotted, the telescope then collects videos or photographs of the phenomenon that will be studied to help scientists understand the flashes.
"The so-called transient lunar phenomena have been known since the 1950s, but they have not been observed in a sufficiently systematic and long-term way," said Hakan Kayal, professor of space technology.
Kayal has a hypothesis about what causes longer lightning and hopes to prove this theory.
"Seismic activities have also been observed on the moon," the professor added.
"When the surface moves, gases reflecting sunlight can escape from inside the moon. This would explain the luminous phenomena, some of which last for hours. "
However, there is currently no explanation for the shortest blinks.
"Science does not know exactly how these phenomena occur on the moon. But he tried to explain them: the impact of a meteor, for example, should cause a brief glare, "said the university in a statement.
"These flashes could also occur when electrically charged solar wind particles react with moon dust."
