Surprisingly, one in a hundred British citizens think they can communicate with the dead. Personalities like Celine Dion and Kesha also say they can smell the deceased. Now scientists have tried to figure out why.
The strange and frightening phenomenon appears to be much more popular than one might think, prompting a team of researchers to scrutinize dozens of psychics and spiritualists in an attempt to find out why some people believe in the paranormal.
Spiritualists believe that human souls continue to exist after death and can communicate with the living through a medium or psychic. It peaked in popularity at the end of the 19th century and has made a comeback in recent years, with British research indicating that there are hundreds of thousands of believers scattered across the country.
Unsurprisingly, the phenomenon of conversing with souls that have left their deadly envelopes has not stood up well to rigorous scientific scrutiny.
Scientists have found that spiritualistic mediums are more prone to immersive mental activities and often have unusual auditory experiences, especially earlier in life. Immersive activities include experiencing altered states of consciousness and imaginative activities.
“Our results say a lot about ‘learning and desire’. For our participants, the principles of spiritualism seem to give meaning to both the extraordinary experiences of childhood as well as the frequent auditory phenomena they experience as practicing mediums ”. explained lead researcher Adam Powell.
Mediums who “hear” spirits are said to experience clairaudient communications, rather than clairvoyants (“seeing”) or clairsentient (“feeling” or “Feel”) communications.
“But all of these experiences may result more from having certain early tendencies or abilities than just believing in the possibility of contacting the dead if enough effort is put in,” Powell added.
The study saw researchers at Durham University conduct a survey of 65 mediums from the National Union of Spiritualists. It found that over 44% of participants said they heard the voice of the dead daily, while over 33% said they heard a voice in the past day.
Most psychics heard the dead in their heads, but around 30% said they heard voices inside and outside their head. The average age of onset of clairaudience experiences was between 21 and 22 years.
Scientists also interviewed a control group of 143 members of the general public to understand key traits of psychics.
The results indicate that people who hear voices turn to spiritualistic beliefs to explain the meaning or significance of their strange experiences.
The researchers say they hope the findings will help people better understand the painful or uncontrollable experiences of hearing voices.
