Driving an all-terrain vehicle was once considered an individual badge of taste. The trend was initiated in the 1970s and 1980s with models like the Range Rover, and from the 1990s, the wave of "sport utility vehicles" spread from the United States to Europe . More recently, "crossover" models have been added to the growing portfolio of modern vehicles. And today, crossover SUVs are starting to replace ordinary passenger cars.
Which means that if you want to stand out from the crowd, you may want to avoid buying an SUV or crossover vehicle. But that does not mean you should go back to a classic sedan. For another possibility, how about a van?
In the past, those who opted for a pickup rather than an SUV did so for solid reasons because they had to bring some suffering capability. The huge cargo space, whether for recreation or work, and off-road capacity distinguish them.
Beside utility trucks like the Isuzu D-Max and the Mitsubishi L200, the Toyota Hilux and the Nissan Navara, only two models meet higher standards: the aging of the Volkswagen Amarok, now with a V6 TDI standard and the still-cool Mercedes-Benz X-Class. Mercedes-Benz has now added a V6 engine: the new X 350d complements the X-Class range with a 3.0-liter, 258 horsepower turbodiesel that delivers 550 Nm of maximum torque. Fuel consumption is commendable: in the official cycle, it burns only 9 liters per 100 kilometers. And this figure can easily be dug out with a somewhat restrained driving style.
Power is transmitted to all four wheels of the X 350d via a seven-speed automatic transmission. It comes directly from the Mercedes-Benz line of cars, and it shines with discreet gear changes. In addition, the six-cylinder does not only grow strong, it is also extremely well insulated. There is no doubt about it: at the wheel of this van, one has the impression of driving a luxury SUV
and this made it possible to clearly distinguish the X 350d from its sister models with the four Nissan. The 190 horsepower X 250d not only lacks refined manners of the V6, it is also much slower: the sprint at 100 km / h takes 11.8 seconds, and it does not exceed 175 km / h
. and a central screen of the Mercedes car range, and the tastefully decorated instrument panel remain unchanged, and only if you look closely, you will recognize some switches from the Nissan parts bin. The X-Class, after all, is based on the Nissan Navara, although the cabin has been significantly enlarged and the structure has been strengthened. The driver and front passenger appreciate the generous space, but the ride comfort on the steep and high-mounted rear seats leaves something to be desired. And while we criticize, a little more storage on the front would be great.
Of course, the storage behind the cabin is not lacking: the huge cargo area is 156 cm wide and 159 cm long. It can be equipped with a hardtop or a fixed or flexible cover for extra charge. By the way, with a total length of 534 cm and a width of 192 cm, the X-Class still fits in the city; its size is roughly equal to that of a luxury sedan.
And just like a luxury sedan, there are none in every corner. Quite different from the ubiquitous crossovers and SUVs mentioned above. In Germany, prices start around 47,000 euros.
