The Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) started a two-week cleanup on the Omahenene-Oshakati Canal yesterday.
All the canal needs to be cleaned in order to improve the water supply of the main purification stations of Olushandja, Ombalantu. , Ogongo and Oshakati.
The cleaning of the canal will result in the removal of silt, vegetation and debris, and more than 1,000 casual workers will be employed for the entire exercise.
NamWater spokesman, Johannes Shigwedha, said the canal will be cleaned in sections to minimize disturbances in the water supply of customers.
During the cleaning of the canal border section, the pumping of water will be interrupted. To ensure the supply of Oshakati, water will be pumped from Olushandja dam in Oshakati.
"NamWater's main customers who will be affected by the shutdown of the two-day water supply are Etunda's ecological project, the city of Ruacana and Oshifo," said Shigwedha .
NamWater will spend $ 3.5 million for this year.
