The Galaxy Note branding could soon come to an end, if we believe the rumors. Samsung would abandon the naming system and instead merge the S and Note series.

The name change of Galaxy Note is it a radical change, but more so in the very fickle smartphone market. According to The Bell, smartphone saturation and delayed upgrade cycles are the two main factors that cause Samsung to radically change the name of its devices. The fact is that more and more people are keeping their devices a lot longer, especially since the line between mid-range phones and flagship devices is becoming increasingly blurred.
Some midrange devices are simply capable of handling basic tasks. They're getting better processors, better-than-average cameras, and nicer screens – for a fraction of the cost of flagship devices. Add to that Google's Treble Project, which provides timely software updates even for not-so-powerful phones. These two factors make it hard to justify dropping a bucket of money just to get the latest model, and Samsung seems to worry about this trend. So the fate of the Note series would depend on the performance of the Galaxy Note 9.
How will Samsung merging the S and Note lines?
If Samsung cancels the Note series, it's not very clear how it's going to merge it with the S line. Does the S naming scheme continue, or is Samsung going to introduce one? completely new? Would there still be a model with a S pen go from the front? After all, the biggest differentiator between the two series is the stylus, which has been exclusive to the Note line since then.
In any case, the alleged move by Samsung could be a radical change for the smartphone landscape in general. Hopefully, that's fine, because any wrong move could give Apple the opportunity to seize Samsung's base.
